Black Belt “Dan” ranks start at 1 and go up, but pre-Black
Belts have “Kyu” ranks that start high end at 1. We used to have too many Kyu numbers to
account for all possible colors and stripes and whatnot, but we have since
adopted the standard Karate classification that starts at White Belt = 10th
Kyu and finishes at Shodan Bo = 1st Kyu as follows:
10th Kyu = White Belt level (includes Blue/Black Stripes, etc.)
9th Kyu = Yellow Belt (includes Stripes)
8th Kyu = Orange Belt (includes Stripes)
7th Kyu = Green Belt (includes Stripes)
6th Kyu = Blue Belt (includes Stripes)
5th Kyu = Purple Belt (includes Stripes)
4th Kyu = Brown Belt
3rd Kyu = Brown Belt / White Stripe
2nd Kyu = Brown Belt / Black Stripe
1st Kyu = Shodan Bo Belt
Stripes within the Beginner and Intermediate levels represent progress within that Kyu rank, and then after Brown each Stripe is its own Kyu level. (And tests are generally 6 or more months apart as more is needed to move up each level at that point, with Test Prep sessions and whatnot.)
After the Kyu ranks, you go from Shodan (first degree BB) up to wherever you go!!! Good luck, and enjoy the journey and progress!
