Concepts and Components to Develop as a Martial Artist:
Concepts and Components to Develop as a Martial Artist: |
AWARENESS: The more AWARE you are of yourself, your surroundings, your situation and your abilities, the better you will be able to deal with whatever arises - or avoid problems in the first place! |
DISTANCE: If you can control the distance, you can usually control the fight. If distance is wrong, otherwise good techniques can become less effective or even ineffective. |
BALANCE: On a basic level, balance is like distance, and "Kuzushi" is the process of breaking down the opponent's balance to make techniques more effective. Maintain your balance while disrupting your opponent's, and victory will come more easily. And balance is also important in life! |
TIMING: If your timing is proper, everything is easier. If not, everything is harder. |
SPEED and STRENGTH: Speed helps techniques find their mark and helps your reactions, and Strength helps the techniques have maximum effect. We work on each, but stronger techniques are often slower. |
ACCURACY and STRUCTURE: Proper aim is important to hit your target, and proper positioning and stances are important for channeling your strength, speed and properly-timed techniques, etc. |
FOCUS and INTENT: The above components can all be there, but without focus and intent something will still be lacking. Developing proper focus and intent by its very nature improves the effects. |
CONTROL: A proper martial artist should have control over his or her techniques, deciding whether to continue or stop before damaging. We want to practice realistic self-defense and sparring without injury. Martial arts training also helps us control ourselves outside the dojo - our emotions, our indulgences, etc. |
