空 = Kara = "Empty" and 手 = te = "Hand," so Karate was originally a weaponless art - or rather, the body is the weapon. However, just as Karate Schools also use kicks (we are about 50:50 at KF USA), which are not "empty hands" either, there are traditional weapons that we practice. Everyone except our youngest Little Ninja group is able to learn the following 4 wooden weapons:
Tonfa, Escrima, Nunchaku and Staff - our Weapon day eack week spends a month on each one, and then we cycle through the "T-E-N-S" rotation 3x/year.
We also have metal weapons that we add to the mix once someone has earned their Black Belt (while we continue to work on the wooden weapons).
Weapons training increases hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness, and many techniques have parallels to unarmed attacks and defenses. While we (hopefully!) do not walk around carrying weapons or get into trouble, it is an interesting way to preserve the traditions. (And if trouble happens when a stick is nearby, we will have some additional skills to employ.)
For some people, Weapons are one of their favorite classes, whereas others prefer all the other training we also do. We like to offer enough of a range of skills and variation to give everyone enough to keep them challenged and happy!
